First day of the new month and I am determined to start fighting a complete lack of inspiration and creativity ever since I came back from Spain. A friend asked me to shorten a pair of slacks and I couldn't even force myself to do THAT- a mere 3 minutes job. How BAD is that! DISASTER, as far as I am concerned.
And it is not because my wardrobe is complete- there are a few gaps need to be filled there, not because there are no fabrics- I have stacks and stacks waiting for their turn to be used. I just cannot even find the way to start approaching this creative block.
While in Spain I bought the current issue of Patrones, and today I got myself the August Burda issue too (this is the first one in a long long time, that in spite of publishing the preview, I actually bought!), I also received my sample subscription issues of Diana Moden (Simplicity edition that means it includes 30 Simplicity models) and Russian magazine ШиК which publishes La Mia Boutique models. Speaking of which, my cousin posted me June's La Mia Boutique which included the March issue as a bonus too! Wow! Not exactly "nothing to choose from" - and this is only the recent aquisitions. So really there is no excuse for my condition. Yet it is there and the inspiration is not…
I think I would love to hear from you, my lovely readers. I would love to know if you go through these kind of stages in your sewing life and how do you cope or deal with them? It there a magic potion that you take and the next morning you are filled with creativity? I guess not, but I would love to read your stories! I guess, I really need you right now!

I´m at the same stage right now. I´ve got a friend´s caftan to finish, a tunic for my daughter and a dress for my mother in law all cut and waiting for me to finish them, but no will to do so. What I´m doing at the moment is tracing the pattern for 102 dress of Burda August...I think this will cheer me up. I´m bad at sewing for others.
ReplyDeletemaybe it is some sort of non-creative period in time? maybe it is not personal at all???? Actually, this is quite cheering to know that I am not the only one like that!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Hmmm 102…… hmmmm, sounds tempting
ReplyDeleteeep! it passes. usually, for me, it passes with a cocktail, sharp scissors, and the prettiest fabric i'm afraid of in my stash. i just decide i need to do SOMETHING and go for it. works 80 percent of the time!
ReplyDeleteWhat usually works for me is to NOT think about it for a little while...do something else, go out with friends, have fun. If you're happy and having fun, inspiration often follows. Most importantly, don't beat yourself up over it!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, yes. To boost my creativity I engage in a totally different activity then sawing. Usually it helps.
ReplyDeleteYes in fact I've been going through the same thing now. My theory is that all the fashion news at the moment is about fall and winter 2012 and while blogs, magazines and stores are all full of inspiration I will never be someone who can make winter clothes in the middle of summer. I agree don't force it, I'm never happy with what I turn out when I make something under those circumstances. Maybe get some of the patterns traced out from your bumper crop of magazines so you are ready to sew when inspiration strikes again!
ReplyDeleteit is amazing to hear your advice and opinions. The fact that it is temporary has always been so obvious to me, but the total apathy was very disappointing. I am not beating myself up over it- I think it is bloggers obligation to deliver (that is not happening right now) puts me to shame more than anything
ReplyDeleteWell, add me to the list of sewists this happens too, too. For me to seems to correlate with lols of time to sew ( so I can't seem to get started on anything). So unfair!
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I am busy with other things in my life, it passes....
bang on the point! lots of time-no interest…
ReplyDeletebeen thinking about it- actually, it might be a good idea.
ReplyDeleteP.S. had no cocktails, but just cut out the pretty fabric i bought 2 years ago and was terrified to start working on…… hope it works, too bad it is way beyond midnight!
ReplyDeleteDo some cooking or drawing/ baking/painting/ drawing or something else creative instead. I've made meringue cookies, two types of ice cream, pizzas from scratch (dough and all yo!) and crackers and dip in the last three days. And am so ready to sew. Also, I've had the Australian Men's Olympic swim team cheering me on. That last bit helps.
ReplyDeletehahaha, great advice, only I don't do any of those things )))) I am blessed with a talented chef (one of my fiance's gifts) so I don't do any cooking at all, and I don't really draw/paint. I just took oonabaloona's advice and cut the prettiest scariest fabric to make a Burda 8/2012 cover peplum top! If this doesn't work, there is always obsessive cleaning!
ReplyDeletethe summer in Ireland has been so bad- A/W collections are very much a hot topic
ReplyDeleteThe thing is- it has been too long, that is why it has become very annoying to me not to be inspired
ReplyDeleteTell me about it! I'm in a similar situation. First, the gardening bug took over me, then I got busy with wedding day approaching and now I just don't know. I really can't get myself to sew. All I keep thinking is that it will eventually pass.
